Trailer Hitch Wiring Harness - Keeps Your Trailer Wiring Safe

A trailer hitch wiring harness is a device that connects the electrical wiring of a trailer to the towing vehicle. A trailer hitch wiring harness is self-adjusting and retractable. As a result, it becomes easy to extend or retract the trailer wires when hitching a trailer with the towing vehicle. Like trailer hitches the harness is available in different connector systems.

Various connectors are available from four to seven pins to allow for the transfer of power for the lighting as well as secondary functions such as electric trailer brake control and light backup. All the connectors (four way connector-seven way connector) provide the hookup for three basic lighting functions (running, turn, brake), besides having extra pins for additional use. Wiring your trailer with a trailer hitch wiring harness, however, is not that difficult.

A trailer hitch wiring harness comes in many sizes and designs. The most common one is the color-coded 4-wire system, which uses:
- Brown wire for tail, license, and side marker lights
- Yellow wire for left hand stop and turn
- Green wire for right hand stop and turn
- White wire for system ground

The range goes up to seven. Power taillight converter kits or universal trailer wiring kits are helpful if you want to modify the entire wiring of your trailer and tow vehicle.

Some trucks like pickups and sports utility vehicles have an inbuilt harness for trailers. In cases of pre-installed hitch, the connector is already there behind a spring-loaded cap.
