A hitch ball is a simple and interdependent component of a trailer hitch. The cargo is attached to this ball shaped device into which a trailer coupler is attached. The hitch ball is made of a strong metal and is removable and adjustable based on the trailer and cargo sizes. More weight can be carried by the bigger and heavier balls.

The hitch balls are available with different finishes like chrome and zinc plated. Only the heat-treated balls come with a raw finish. Highest quality balls for Class-I, II, III and IV loads are made of cold forged steel.

The hitch ball slips through the hollow end of a ball mount which in turn enters into the open end of the trailer hitch receiver. Ball mount hitches adjust hitch height to the trailer tongue height and are available in a variety of sizes. This function is called "rise" or "drop" of the ball mount. The extra-long ball mounts are useful in towing irregularly shaped tow vehicles like horse trailers while curved ball mounts help to adjust the ball in a lower or higher position for using different socket heights.

- The ball size should be same as trailer coupler size
- Never attach the cargo which weighs more than what has been recommended by the ball manufacturer.
- Do not alter the ball in any non-prescribed manner
- At the time of installation of the ball, use only the lock washer and nut that are provided by the manufacturer.
- Use the ball only in the professionally designed trailers and if you notice any kind of damages on the ball, change it without any delay.
