Class 2 Trailer Hitches - Tow Up To 3500 lbs
When purchasing a trailer hitch for your vehicle, you will be faced with the dilemma of choosing the right hitch. Ball hitches are classified into five basic categories, from Class 1 to Class 5, depending on the weight required to be towed and the towing vehicle itself. The Class 1 hitch is a light-duty hitch, which can only tow up to 2000 pounds, whereas the Class 2 trailer hitches can hook and tow loads up to 3500 pounds. Class 3, 4 and 5 hitches have higher rated capacities than the Class 1 and Class 2 trailer hitches.
A ball mount is that part of a trailer hitch that slides into the receiver and fastens with a pin and clip, allowing the attachment of a ball for towing a trailer. Different ball mounts can be used to raise or lower the height of the ball to allow for level trailer towing over uneven terrain. Bigger and heavier hitch balls can bear more weight than smaller ones. Normally, the Class 2 trailer hitches fits a 1 1/4" receiver hitch and has a 1 1/2" ball but every hitch can be different.
While installing a Class 2 trailer hitch make sure that the ball size is the same as the trailer coupler size, and never exceed the recommended weight rating stamped on the ball. The shank size and trailer ball mount too must be appropriate for the towing application. However, it is possible that some Class 2 trailer hitches have a 2" receiver yet require Class 3 accessories.
